30s Monterrey Jacket with Appliques

30s Monterrey Jacket with Appliques

This ornate jacket is probably from the 1920's or 1930's. A course wool weave in brilliant red is the base for elaborate appliqués, with a male and female dancer and other motifs. The female dancer's braids swing fee of the jacket...a nice touch of realism. The shoulders are gathered and padded, and there are 2 pockets on the front. The wool yarn edging has worn around the collar and hem, but is easily restore-able. There are a few dark stains on one front panel that have not yet been treated or cleaned. There are also a few small holes that have been nicely repaired, and are barely detectable. Some of the appliqués are loose and again, any broken threads are restore-able. I have worn this out to a few Day of the Dead Festivals, and everyone always compliments me on the uniqueness of this jacket. I have seen more modern versions from the 40's and 50's, but they are never this elaborate. From shoulder to shoulder measures 23 inches, Chest is 40" , sleeves are 22 inches long on the outside measurement, and from the base of the collar to the bottom hem measures 26. 5 inches. Jacket is bright red. I need to take newer pictures. Since originally posting this, I have secured a lot of the appliques that were loose on the edges.
