I have been obsessed with Art Nouveau decorative art for as long as I can rememberâ this piece is such a special example of the style, and it makes a wonderful gift. The pendant is a "vesta," made to house vestas or "strike anywhere" matches, which came on the market in the 1830s: the matches contained phosphorus and ignited with friction, so they were housed in these small containers to prevent accidental combustion.
Likely made in France or Germany, this piece is crafted of 800 Silver (silver with an 80% purity) and features an Art Nouveau Iris repoussé design. It opens with a hinge; originally matches would have been placed inside, but it can be used to house anything you desire. At the base is a striking plate for matches.
