80s French Couture Gold Lamè Two Piece Coctail Dress By Philippe Venet

80s French Couture Gold Lamè Two Piece Coctail Dress By Philippe Venet

French fashion designer Philippe Venet, who was Hubert de Givenchy’s lifetime partner, launched his couture house in 1962. After his death in 2021, he was described as “one of the finest tailors in the history of French couture.” “Philippe Venet made Parisian couture shine, particularly in the United States, where he remained one of the most appreciated couturiers for a long time,” the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode said in a tribute.

This 1980s ensemble by Philippe Venet is a rare vintage treasure, especially for collectors of French couture. It comprises a gold lamè top or jacket with a thin, black diamond pattern running throughout the fabric. It is a quintessentially 1980s design with big shoulders and a surplice top with peplum that swags to one side where it ties on the side of the waist. The sleeves are gathered and quite full at the top but taper to be very narrow at the wrists (with zippers). The wrap skirt is lightly gathered but hangs straight. Both the top and skirt are lined in sheer black silk chiffon. The surface of the fabric is delicate, but should you encounter a loose end of the gold lame, just carefully clip it off – there is so much gold thread in this fabric that it won’t show at all. The measurements indicate that the ensemble is a modern size Small, or 2-4.
