70s Caftan Style Long Cardigan Sweater Oversize by John Ashpool

This casually chic caftan-style cardigan sweater by designer John Ashpool dates from the late 1970s. Designed in England by Ashpool, the sweater was actually manufactured in Italy—Italian knitwear is the best! The very lightweight, semi-sheer knit is 80% rayon and 20% linen, with blue speckled woven rayon fabric trim and front ties. The speckled trim is embellished with rust zigzag stitching, echoing the rust zigzags in the knit pattern. The background of the sweater knit is a dark purple-charcoal grey shade, with lilac vertical stripes, and the aforementioned rust zigzags. The fit of this full-length cardigan is similar to a traditional robe, with wide, square sleeves and a very loose fit. It came with a skinny tie that could be used as a waist sash—see photo. I like it better as a skinny scarf or hair tie, since belting the sweater takes away form its slouchy caftan-like fit—but you can choose for yourself! Unbelted, the sweater should fit many sizes well. I have taken the measurements with the front edges of the cardigan just touching, for reference. In very good condition, this unusual 70s cardigan sweater has one ¼-inch spot on the right sleeve, a few loose trim stitches on the speckled rayon piping, and a tiny mend in one of the front ties. It will look equally at home at the beach, or cozied up by the fire!
