70s/80s Purple Satin Dress With Tinsel Lace Bodice By Helga
Helga was established in 1947 by Robert Oppenheimer and his wife Helga Kallman Oppenheimer. Robert managed the business while Helga designed the better evening wear and suits for which the company became known. Dating this dress is a little confusing. It has an old paper label in one of the seams with handwriting on it, but it also has a cleaning label which were not required by law until the mid-1980s. Regardless, it is in excellent condition without flaws.
This dress from Helga features a purple and silver tinsel lace bodice and a purple satin skirt. The top has a skin tone chiffon lining, I think more for modesty in this case than to create a nude illusion. It also has a dainty round collar with a purple bow. The long sleeves are gathered at the shoulders. The skirt is midi length with a self tie belt. There are no labels but the skirt fabric looks and feels like a high quality silk satin, and the purple lace is woven with silver metallic threads throughout. Closure is with a back zipper.
