50s Vintage Middle Eastern Wall Hanging Tapestry Pray

50s Vintage Middle Eastern Wall Hanging Tapestry Pray

MCM tapestry dates 1950s-1970s. This is a simple design tapestry, the fabric is velvet-like.

This is a tapestry weaving which uses a weft-face weave. The primary difference between a rug and a tapestry is the way they are constructed, even if they look the same on the surface (the design). Most tapestries are weft-faced weavings where the design is produced by taking the weft yarns or threads and weaving them over 2 warp threads and under 1, then repeating. Tapestries usually have the warp threads hidden in the finished weaving.

This is a simpler tapestry than I usually see and was likely made for the tourist trade. It is a nice design.

measures:
25 x 40

condition: colors still vibrant, I don't see any pulls in the weave.
