19th C. Hair Mourning Scene Brooch 14k Gold Antique Hairwork Victorian Jewelry

19th C. Hair Mourning Scene Brooch 14k Gold Antique Hairwork Victorian Jewelry

Truly stunning hairwork mourning scene brooch circa mid-late 19th century.

Set in a 14k gold frame with a thick beveled glass front. Beneath the glass is a scene done in sepia (hair that is crushed into a paint) and palette work (hair cut into small pieces and used to create elaborate designs).

The brooch depicts a very quintessential mourning scene, including a dramatic, drooping willow tree, a large urn, and what appears to be a skull. The upper left side of the scene looks to portray a flock of birds in flight.

Measurements

Approx 1 3/4" x 1 3/8"

Condition

Lovely condition overall with minor age-related wear. There are some tiny bits that have come loose inside, but the majority is intact and the brooch presents beautifully.
